nl diagnosed skin biopsy, demonstrating superficial , deep perivascular , interstitial mixed inflammatory cell infiltrate (including lymphocytes, plasma cells, mononucleated , multinucleated histiocytes, , eosinophils) in dermis , subcutis, necrotising vasculitis adjacent necrobiosis , necrosis of adnexal structures. areas of necrobiosis more extensive , less defined in granuloma annulare. presence of lipid in necrobiotic areas may demonstrated sudan stains. cholesterol clefts, fibrin, , mucin may present in areas of necrobiosis. depending on severity of necrobiosis, cell types may more predominant. when lesion in stages, neutrophils may present, whereas in later stages of development lymphocytes , histiocytes may more predominant.
