during first years of 19th century, rumyantsev influential alexander , mother maria fyodorovna, serving minister of commerce (1802–1811) , president of state council (1810–1812).


as foreign minister (appointed 1808), advocated closer alliance france. on receiving news of napoleon s invasion of russia (1812), suffered stroke , lost hearing. when napoleon entered moscow, advised emperor dismiss kutuzov , seek peace @ cost. alexander lost confidence in nikolay petrovich, retired in 1814 before congress of vienna.


nicholas rumyantsev died on 3 january 1826 in neo-palladian palace on english quay in st petersburg. statue stands in front of gomel palace in belarus.
