as lucan s bankruptcy proceeded, in august 1975 creditors informed missing earl had unsecured debts of £45,000 , preferential liabilities £1,326. assets estimated @ £22,632. family silver sold in march 1976 around £30,000. remaining debts repaid lucan family trust in years following disappearance. family granted probate on estate in 1999, no death certificate issued, , heir, george bingham, lord bingham, refused permission take father s title , seat in house of lords. following passage of presumption of death act 2013, bingham began new attempt have father declared dead, proved successful in high court hearing @ rolls building on 3 february 2016. therefore inherited father s title, becoming 8th earl of lucan.
