little known history of abbey before 9th century. on 10 february 878, emperor charles fat gave wife richardis monasteries of säckingen, of st. felix , of regula in zurich royal estate. grant included extensive political rights , large estate, covered land in rhine , frick valleys, southern hotzenwald, , lands in zurich along lake walen , valley of glarus.


in 1173 emperor frederick barbarossa granted rights imperial bailiwick of säckingen abbey count albert iii of habsburg. foundation development of habsburg territorial sovereignty on säckingen. in 1307 abbess of säckingen elevated rank of reichsfürst or imperial prince. in 1395, glarus valley broke away abbey , became independent, yet retained image of st. fridolin coat of arms of canton.


between 1565 , 1575 abbey buildings renovated , expanded. then, in 1806 abbey closed. on 12 june 1806, representatives of twelve german princes met napoleon form confederation of rhine. part of agreement, abbey closed , abbey s property transferred grand duke of baden.


as of 2010 buildings used caritas catholic charity community center.
