the in midst of united states portion of 1979 world tour , had played passaic, new jersey, new york city, detroit, , pittsburgh before arriving in cincinnati. concert sellout, 18,348 tickets sold. majority of these, 14,770, unassigned general admission tickets first-come, first-served.


a few hours before show, sizeable crowd had gathered @ front of arena. entry arena through series of individual doors along front of arena, few doors @ each side. crowd focused @ each of doors. doors not opened @ scheduled time, causing crowd become increasingly agitated , impatient. during period, undertook late soundcheck. members of crowd heard , mistakenly believed concert starting. people in of crowd began pushing toward front, rush dissipated crowd realized no doors had been opened , concert had not begun.
