the stadium-armory station serves rfk stadium, home of d.c. united soccer team, served home of washington redskins, washington nationals, , washington senators before team moved texas , became texas rangers. station serves d.c. jail , d.c. armory, both popular venue shows , entertainment , headquarters of district of columbia national guard. potomac avenue station, stadium-armory 1 of 2 metro stations within walking distance of congressional cemetery. before closure in 2001, d.c. general hospital served stadium-armory station.


the station opened on july 1, 1977. opening coincided completion of 11.8 miles (19.0 km) of rail between national airport , rfk stadium , opening of arlington cemetery, capitol south, crystal city, eastern market, farragut west, federal center sw, federal triangle, foggy bottom–gwu, l enfant plaza, mcpherson square, national airport, pentagon, pentagon city, potomac avenue, rosslyn , smithsonian stations. orange line service station began upon line s opening on november 20, 1978. stadium–armory serve eastern terminus of blue line opening through opening of extension addison road on november 22, 1980. silver line service @ stadium-armory began on july 26, 2014.


with redevelopment of former d.c. general hospital campus mixed-use neighborhood called hill east , area around stadium-armory station in transition first few decades of twenty-first century. addtitionally, planned move of d.c. united new soccer-specific stadium in buzzard point area of washington year 2020, future of rfk stadium uncertain, possibility of demolition lingering on 1960s-era facility.
