in 1928 married george mcbride, protestant orangeman , former member of ulster volunteers. ironically, formation of ulster volunteers prompted formation of irish volunteers, of carney member. carney alienated in life did not support marriage george mcbride. mcbride fellow socialist. continued involved in trade union movement, working irish transport , general workers union.


a number of serious health problems limited political activities in late 1930s. carney died in belfast, northern ireland on 21st of november 1943, , buried in milltown cemetery. resting place found years later , headstone erected national graves association, belfast. oration done belfast republican, liam rice. because carney married protestant , former orangeman, not allowed have name (mcbride) on gravestone due religious differences. married fifteen years , george mcbride never remarried after carney s death.


in 2013, seventieth anniversary of carney s death remembered socialist republican party. 1 hundred people attended short parade followed, marking commemorating work carney did cause. placed in high esteem among other hundreds of radical women, stood believed in, regardless of consequences faced.
