the property owned bishopric of bamberg 1007. castle mentioned first time in 1178 in document saint paul s abbey. prerequisite development of eponymous settlement, rose town status in 1289. second quarter of 14th century until sale of entire bamberg estate in carinthia austrian state in 1759, castle served residence of vice-dominus, represented bishop in local issues. building, consisting of 2 irregular, interconnected wings, converted italian architects in 16th century fortress guard against approaching turks. @ same time, complex expanded domestic buildings, gates , towers. in 1561, bell tower built.


in 1846, industrial pioneer, hugo henckel von donnersmarck, acquired barony of wolfsberg, because of wealth of wood , hydropower, needed operate iron works. converted castle 1847 1853 palace in english tudor style using 2 viennese architects johann romano , august schwendenwein , had lavishly decorated interior built. there nothing left of former renaissance building.

next main building there former riding school, built in 1855 in neo-romanesque style.


the castle grounds date 1850s. extensive landscape garden 1 of more important garden architectural monuments in austria , listed in monument protection act.


the current owner of estate kärntner montanindustrie (carinthian mining industry), hires halls events , weddings. managing director andreas graf henckel von donnersmarck. castle restaurant run stölzl family.
