the territory of gurjaani has not been systematically studied archaeologically. occasional , incidental finds, such burials, pottery, , byzantine coins, suggest home established settlement in middle ages. gurjaani first documented village in charter issued in name of king alexander of kakheti (r. 1476–1511), granting locale exemption taxation. in historical documents gurjaani mentioned toponym of kakhtubani, 1 of town s neighborhoods , home kvelatsminda church. gurjaani in possession of andronikashvili noble family. result of series of marauding inroads mountains of neighboring dagestan, gurjaani had been virtually depopulated 1770s.
