the high bridge water tower, located in park between west 173rd , 174th streets, built in 1866-72 meet increasing demands on city s water system. 200-foot-tall octagonal tower designed john b. jervis in mixture of romanesque revival , neo-grec styles, , accompanied 7-acre reservoir. high bridge system inaugurated in 1872, , reached full capacity 1875. opening of croton aqueduct, high bridge system became less relied upon; during world war taken out of service when sabotage feared. in 1949 tower disconnected system, , carillon, donated altman foundation, installed in 1958. tower s cupola damaged arson fire in 1984. tower , cupola rehabilitated , restored in 1989-90.
