until highway 1 freeway (originally 401 ) built in mid 1960s, of fraser highway part of trans-canada highway. built along route of old yale road, first built in 1874 between yale , new westminster. fraser highway route designated hwy. 1 1941 1972 while new freeway designated hwy. 401 until 1972. in 1973, freeway route became hwy. 1 while fraser highway became hwy. 1a.

a 4 km (2 ⁄2 mi) segment of road between west vancouver , vancouver designated highway 1a. began in north sharing alignment highway 99 highway 1 interchange @ taylor way on lions gate bridge , along stanley park causeway, , terminated @ edge of stanley park become georgia street. concurrent highway 99 entire length, 1a designation redundant , dropped in 2016.
kingsway & fraser highway
it formerly shared 28 km (17 mi) alignment highway 99a stanley park causeway , west end , downtown vancouver way 98 avenue in surrey via west georgia street, seymour street, main street, kingsway, 10th avenue, mcbride boulevard, pattullo bridge , king george boulevard (formerly , still known king george highway) @ point highway 1a diverged east. east of diverge, highway 1a known locally fraser highway. two- , four-lane highway went southeast 9 km (6 mi) junction highway 15 in surrey, continued southeast 5 km (3.1 mi) junction highway 10 in langley. highway 1a briefly left fraser highway (which passes through downtown langley), following langley bypass , 2 km (1 ⁄4 mi) concurrency highway 10 glover road, rejoining fraser highway 1 km (⁄2 mi) afterward. 15 km (9 mi) southeast , highway 1a reached intersection highway 13 @ aldergrove. 9 km (5 mi) east of highway 13 junction, 1a segment terminated @ interchange highway 1 west of abbotsford (exit 83).

chilliwack
the chilliwack-rosedale yale road east section ran trans-canada highway @ vedder road crossing (exit 119), through chilliwack, cheam , rosedale, , reconnecting trans-canada highway along highway 9 (exit 135). section of yale road part of original trans-canada highway route until completion of 401 freeway section in 1960s. in 2005, city of chilliwack posted signage along yale road east section designating trans-canada parallel route .
