history

following approval finnish parliament, host country agreement came force on 20 june 1984. lal jayawardena appointed inaugural director 1st of march in 1985, , institute located @ premises @ annankatu 42c in helsinki, finland.


research

during existence unu-wider has produced large amount of research on broad topics of poverty, inequality , growth. research programme changes every 2 years. constructed director in consultation unu-wider board following extensive discussions unu-wider research staff, leading economists, , donor government representatives. areas of research have spanned facets , levels of development economics including topics like; finance , trade; economic growth , environment; women , development; international migration , refugees; micro-simulation of tax benefit reforms; social impact of privatization; fiscal policies growth; transition , institutions; development aid; global trends in inequality , poverty; personal assets global perspective , many more. during mid-1980s horn of africa confronting widespread famine. coincided launch of first unu-wider research programme, theme of “hunger , poverty: poorest billion” included in it. research directed jean drèze , nobel laureate amartya sen. has been argued resulting 3 volumes of study transformed thinking on issues of famine , food security @ time. in late 1990s wider undertook major study of income inequality trends throughout world under direction of director giovanni andrea cornia. study uncovered called “new causes” of inequality linked excessively liberal economic policies , way in economic reforms have been implemented. furthermore, study produced first version of world income inequality database (wiid). comprehensive , freely available database of statistics on inequality trends within countries. since 2009, under director finn tarp, unu-wider has concentrated on “triple crisis” of food, climate change , finance.
