the first complete tosca recording made in 1918, using acoustic process. conductor, carlo sabajno, had been gramophone company s house conductor since 1904; had made complete recordings of several operas, including verdi s la traviata , rigoletto, before tackling tosca largely unknown cast, featuring italian soprano lya remondini in title role. next year, in 1919, sabajno recorded tosca again, time more well-known singers, including valentina bartolomasi , attilio salvaneschi tosca , cavaradossi. ten years later, in 1929, sabajno returned opera third time, recording it, electrical process, orchestra , chorus of teatro alla scala , stars carmen melis , apollo granforte in roles of tosca , scarpia. in 1938 hmv secured services of renowned tenor beniamino gigli, soprano maria caniglia tosca , conductor oliviero de fabritiis, practically complete recording extended on 14 double-sided shellac discs.


in post-war period, following invention of long-playing records, tosca recordings dominated maria callas. in 1953, conductor victor de sabata , la scala forces, made recording emi decades has been considered best of recorded performances of opera. recorded role again emi in stereo in 1964. number of callas s live stage performances of tosca preserved. earliest 2 performances in mexico city, in 1950 , 1952, , last in london in 1965. first stereo recording of opera made in 1957 rca victor. erich leinsdorf conducted rome opera house orchestra , chorus zinka milanov tosca, jussi björling cavaradossi , leonard warren scarpia. herbert von karajan s acclaimed performance vienna state opera in 1963, leontyne price, giuseppe di stefano , giuseppe taddei in leading roles.


the 1970s , 1980s saw proliferation of recordings, many of live performances. plácido domingo first recorded cavaradossi in 1973, , continued @ regular intervals until 1994. in 1976 joined son, plácido domingo jr., sang shepherd boy s song in british recording new philharmonia orchestra. more recent commended recordings have included antonio pappano s 2000 royal opera house version angela gheorghiu, roberto alagna , ruggero raimondi. recordings of tosca in languages other italian rare not unknown; on years versions in french, german, spanish, hungarian , russian have been issued. admired english language version released in 1995 in david parry led philharmonia orchestra , largely british cast. since late 1990s numerous video recordings of opera have been issued on dvd , blu-ray disc (bd). these include recent productions , remastered versions of historic performances.
