one of main roads crossing neighborhood, , bearing today name (calea rahovei, rahova road) known podul calicilor (bridge of poor), first document mentioning dating 1639. term bridge came material used pave it: long wooden bridge beams, cheaper stone pavement. living near road beggars , poor people, gathered la cour des miracles in paris. later, authorities scattered them away, , road renamed calea craiovei remove association poverty. modern name dates end of independence war.

since 1950s, rahova entered period of long urban decay, because was, until 1960s, furthest district city centre, had lack of infrastructure , contained rahova penitentiary, largest jail in bucharest. in 1970s area headquarters of infamous barbugiu clan, first organized crime gang recognized authorities. calea rahovei known florists way (drumul florăreselor), because (and amount still is) location of bucharest s flower markets , flower gardens.


starting in 1997, various efforts made renew area. rahova undergoing modernization. rahova linked city center light metro line, upgraded existing tram line, trains running every minute. new façades have been built apartment buildings along calea rahovei, significant improvements in neighborhood high school (including new swimming pool) , complete overhaul of parks, flower market (piața de flori) , rahova market. done support of both bucharest city hall , sector 5 mayor (where rahova located) , has resulted in gentrification of district.
