during 20th century many of houses had formerly been residences of single families maids or other staff divided flats , offices. however, tradition of distinguished gentlefolk retiring crescent continued. whole crescent designated grade listed building in 1950. number 16 became guest house in 1950. in 1971 combined number 15 become royal crescent hotel occupying central properties of crescent, renovated , additional rooms in pavilions , coach houses within gardens included in accommodation. sold in 1978 john tham, chairman of london sloane club, , restored. later purchased von essen hotels, became insolvent in 2011. in september 2011 expected london & regional properties purchase hotel, negotiations ended in january 2012 without deal. on 2 april 2012, investment company topland group announced had purchased royal crescent hotel.


in 1970s resident of no 22, miss amabel wellesley-colley, painted front door yellow instead of traditional white. bath city council issued notice insisting should repainted. court case ensued resulted in secretary of state environment declaring door remain yellow. other proposals alteration , development including floodlighting , swimming pool have been defeated.
