the m15 squad automatic weapon modified m14 developed replacement .30-06 m1918 browning automatic rifle use squad automatic weapon. added heavier barrel , stock, hinged buttplate, selector switch automatic fire, , bipod. sling bar. m14, chambered 7.62×51mm nato.
firing tests showed m14, when equipped selector switch, hinged buttplate , bipod, performed m15. result, m15 dropped , modified m14 became squad automatic weapon. accuracy , control problems variant led addition of pistol grip, folding rubber covered metal foregrip , muzzle stabilizer. however, poor suppressive fire weapon owing 20-round magazines , overheated rapidly.

m14e2/m14a1
selective fire version of standard m14 used squad automatic weapon. successor full-automatic m14 bipod , never issued m15. developmental model known m14e2. conceptional weapon developed infantry school, known m14 (usaib) (united states army infantry board). issued in 1963 , redesignated m14a1 in 1966.
it had full pistol-gripped in-line stock control recoil, plastic upper forend save weight, muzzle compensator, bar sling, m2 bipod, , folding metal vertical foregrip mounted under forend of stock. although improvement on m14 when in full-auto, still difficult control, overheated rapidly, , 20-round magazine limited ability deliver suppressive fire.
m14m (modified)/m14nm (national match)
the m14m semi-automatic version of standard m14 developed use in civilian rifle marksmanship activities such civilian marksmanship program. m14m rifles converted existing m14 rifles welding select-fire mechanism prevent full-automatic firing. m14nm (national match) m14m rifle built national match accuracy standards.
