early history
pendlebury formed celtic pen meaning hill , burh settlement. township variously recorded penelbiri, pennilbure, pennebire , pennesbyry in 13th century, penilburi in 1300, penulbury in 1332; penhulbury in 1358, pendulbury in 1561 , pendlebury after 1567.
in 1199 king john confirmed gift of carucate of land called peneberi ellis son of robert. had made grant when earl of mortain (1189–99) , confirmed when became king in deed signed @ le mans in france. ellis described master sergeant of salford , benefactor of cockersand abbey.
in 1201 pendlebury linked manor of shoresworth south (described 1 oxgang of land ) before shoreworth became part of pendleton. manors of pendlebury , shoresworth held of king in thegnage rent of 12 shillings in 1212. ellis died in or 1216, , son adam succeeded manor , serjeanty. in 1274 ellis, son of roger came violent death, , amabel, widow claimed dower in various lands against roger de pendlebury. short time afterwards, amabel having received dower, , roger de pendlebury had defend suit brought adam de pendlebury, satisfied jury of title manor. ellis had brother, william , daughters maud, lettice , beatrice. maud married adam son of alexander de pilkington of pilkington, , had daughter cecily. manor sold before 1300 adam de prestwich. new lord of pendlebury married alice de woolley daughter of richard son of henry de pontefract, eventual heir daughter alice, wife of jordan de tetlow. heir daughter, joan, married richard de langley, , manor descended langleys until end of 16th century. robert langley died 19 september 1561, leaving 4 daughters co-heirs. on division of estates, agecroft, , lands in pendlebury, became portion of anne, married william dauntesey, wiltshire. manor of pendlebury claimed daunteseys time, afterwards held prestwich, descending in coke family until 1780, when sold peter drinkwater of irwell house, prestwich.
agecroft hall
agecroft hall, tudor home of lord of manor of pendlebury, stood on rising ground on west side of river irwell, flows southwards towards salford , manchester between high ground of kersal , prestwich east , north, , irlams o th height , pendlebury on west. building began towards end of reign of henry vii. in 1666, of thirty-five hearths liable tax in pendlebury, agecroft hall large house had eleven hearths.
at end of 19th century, industrialisation swept through irwell valley. collieries sunk around agecroft hall, railway tracks cut across manor , dirty lake formed on edge of estate. house fell disrepair , sold @ auction in 1925 mr , mrs thomas c williams. structure dismantled, crated, shipped across atlantic, , painstakingly reassembled in windsor farms, richmond, virginia, usa. agecroft hall re-created tourist attraction on banks of james river, in setting chosen reminiscent of original site @ agecroft near river irwell.
the langley name remembered locally having several streets, langley road, langley mill , langley housing estate in middleton named after family. agecroft hall estate built housing estate on agecroft road (a6044), named after hall.

pendlebury saw extensive coal extraction until closure of agecroft colliery in 1990s. wheatsheaf colliery on bolton road between carrington street , city walk on wheatsheaf industrial estate , newtown colliery (on clifton/newtown, pendlebury boundary, bounded manchester road/bolton road (a666), billy lane, rake lane , pit lodge ( dam ), later became known queensmere ). agecroft colliery reopened in 1960 following investment of £9,000,000 , 7 years of establishment works, making first new pit sunk in lancashire since second world war. agecroft stood on site of lumn s colliery had unusual arrangement of winding gear concealed in 3 huge towers – tallest of 174 feet (53 m) high , abandoned in 1932. after 1947 agecroft colliery sent of coal cegb s agecroft power station, via conveyor belt system crossed bridge on agecroft road. mining finished in 1990, , agecroft colliery site home agecroft commerce park. kearsley, clifton, pendlebury , pendleton miners association established in 1888 , became pendlebury branch of national union of mineworkers in 1959. decline of industry, once popular pendlebury miners club (at top of temple drive, swinton) demolished in 1990s.
