history
early history

for many millennia, great plains of north america inhabited nomadic native americans. 16th century 18th century, kingdom of france claimed ownership of large parts of north america, including area. after defeat in french , indian war, france secretly ceded new france spain, treaty of fontainebleau.


19th century

in 1802, spain returned of land france. in 1803, of modern day kansas acquired united states france part of 828,000 square mile louisiana purchase @ price of 2.83 cents per acre.


in 1854, kansas territory organized, , following year marion county established, including portions of elk. 6 years later, kansas admitted state.


20th century

the community of elk founded in mid 19th century, , continued exist 1920s. town had post office 1874 until december 1924, when replaced rural free delivery. post office existed in elk august 24, 1874 december 15, 1924.


21st century

no buildings remain in elk, , considered ghost town.
