bunkum cave
one of many substantial caves located on limestone-rich highland rim, bunkum cave situated along headwaters of cove creek, south of cordell hull birthplace. mouth of cave approximately 100 feet (30 m) wide , 30 feet (9.1 m) high (30m x 9m). 1992 survey of cave tennessee division of archaeology found evidence cave had been occupied during middle woodland period (c. 1000 b.c. - 1000 a.d.). william hull, cordell s father, used cave house moonshine still. state purchased cave , surrounding 29 acres (120,000 m) in 2002 addition cordell hull birthplace. shortly thereafter, 2.5-mile (4.0 km) loop trail constructed allow access cave s entrance. @ present, permit required explore cave beyond lighted area.
