two rival companies, hamburg america line (often referred hapag ) , norddeutscher lloyd, competed in germany. first , second world wars dealt damage 2 companies, both forced renounce ships winning side in both wars. 2 merged form hapag-lloyd in 1970.


the ocean liner industry in france consisted of 2 rival companies: compagnie générale transatlantique (commonly known transat or french line ) , messageries maritimes. cgt operated on north atlantic route well-known liners such ss normandie , ss france, while mm operated in french colonies in asia , africa. decolonization in second half of 20th century led sharp decline in profit mm, , merged cgt in 1975 form compagnie générale maritime.
