in 1895, after abdication of country s last king, thibaw min, taungdaw sayadaw, thathanapaing of burma, died. subsequent election elected pakhan sayadaw thathanabaing-elect, although british refused acknowledge or recognize title.
in 1903, lieutenant-governor of british burma, hugh shakespear barnes, reinstated title sanad charter, giving thathanapaing nominal authority on internal administration of sangha in upper burma , on buddhist ecclesiastical law. (lower burma, had been annexed in 1852, remained without religious head.) taunggwin sayadaw appointed, position abolished after death , no successor ever appointed.
