macmillan described conception of piece in score program notes, writing:



my 3rd piano concerto, mysteries of light, attempts revive ancient practice of writing music based on structure of rosary. famous example of collection of rosary (or mystery) sonatas violin heinrich biber, written in late 17th century. these consist of 15 movements based on joyful, sorrowful , glorious mysteries. in 2002 set of meditations introduced john paul ii, luminous mysteries, , these basis of 5 sections of concerto.
