reynolds son of gaines w. reynolds, wholesale grocery salesman, , wife, anna louise. grew in oklahoma city, oklahoma , got first job in newspaper business selling papers @ local railroad station.


in high school, reynolds decided wanted attend university of missouri s missouri school of journalism, , worked during high school , successive summers @ meat packing plant pay studies. while @ university of missouri, initiated pi kappa alpha. graduated in 1927.


reynolds first business venture photo engraving plant. purchased , sold quincy evening news in massachusetts, using proceeds sale buy okmulgee daily times in oklahoma , southwest times record in arkansas. 2 papers launched donrey media group. operating in small towns, group grew include more 100 businesses, including newspapers, radio stations, television stations, cable television operations, , billboard companies. perhaps biggest success came ownership of las vegas review-journal, largest newspaper in nevada.


reynolds interrupted newspaper career serve in military during world war ii, in military intelligence and, later, officer in charge of pacific , london editions of soldiers newspaper, yank, army weekly. attained rank of major, received legion of merit, purple heart , bronze star medal during military service, , returned civilian status in 1945.
