the station opened in 1902 whitechapel & bow railway (w&br). electrified services started in 1905. first services provided district railway (now district line); metropolitan line followed in 1936 (in 1988 section of metropolitan renamed hammersmith & city line). in 1946 station expanded , rebuilt chief architect of london underground, stanley heaps , assistant thomas bilbow, part of central line eastern extension, services starting on 4 december 1946. following nationalisation of joint venture owners of w&br, full ownership of station passed london underground in 1950.


incidents

on 5 july 2007 central line train derailed when hit roll of fire blanket, had been blown out of cross-passage between 2 tunnels strong crosswinds.


in november 2009, part of plastic barrier broke off departing train , struck 3 commuters. 1 woman suffered 5 cm cut in forehead, , london underground ltd faced fine of £20,000 after admitting liability in case.
