twelve hours after great miami hurricane struck alabama, eighth tropical storm of season formed in east-central atlantic 2,000 mi (3,220 km) southwest of horta in azores on september 21. on next 3 days, moved north of due east , rapidly strengthened, becoming minimal hurricane 12:00 utc on september 22 , later peaking @ 105 mph (169 km/h)—equivalent moderately strong category 2 hurricane on saffir-simpson hurricane scale—on morning of september 24. 24 hours thereafter, cyclone briefly curved northeast before turning sharply east on september 26. late day, cyclone swerved precipitously north, making landfall on island of são miguel near ponta delgada @ peak intensity. curving northwest , south of due west, cyclone weakened after striking são miguel , reverted minimal hurricane late on september 27. gradually completed counter-clockwise loop through western azores, curving due south tropical storm, though cool surface temperatures , enlarged size suggest might have been subtropical cyclone then. afterward, late on september 28, hit faial island near horta sustained winds near 70 mph (110 km/h). on next 2 days, moved south-southeast , weakened, curving east-southeast beginning on september 30. turning south of due east, dissipated 18:00 utc on october 1.
