colonists, sent island in mid-1930s establish possession claims united states, built earhart light (0°48′20.48″n 176°37′8.55″w / 0.8056889°n 176.6190417°w / 0.8056889; -176.6190417 (earhart light)), named after amelia earhart, day beacon or navigational landmark. shaped short lighthouse. constructed of white sandstone painted black bands , black top meant visible several miles out sea during daylight hours. located near boat landing @ middle of west coast former site of itascatown. beacon partially destroyed during world war ii japanese attacks, rebuilt in 1960s men u.s. coast guard ship blackhaw. 2000, beacon reported crumbling , had not been repainted in decades.


ann pellegreno overflew island in 1967, , linda finch did in 1997, during memorial circumnavigation flights commemorate earhart s 1937 world flight. no landings attempted both pellegreno , finch flew low enough drop wreath on island.
