architecture

strood wharf pier frindsbury church (zoom)


as result of quarrying, church stands isolated above chalk cliffs, visible of medway valley. surrounded graveyards. west churchyard managed medway council , east churchyard pcc.


exterior

the church composite building of flint , ragstone rubble ragstone , caen stone dessings. earlier work flint/ragstone , later rubble/limestone. plan traditional rectangular chancel, arch, nave aisles north , south , west end tower. chancel, nave , lower parts of tower norman. in 14th century tower stair , south aisle added. north aisle added (or possibly rebuilt) in 1884.


the tower topped shingle spire set within battlements. fine views afforded round, access through bell chamber difficult , not open public. there 3 stages, lowest being west end porch, above present ringing chamber , above bell chamber.


the south aisle extends chancel arch towards west end, stops 1 bay short. roofed in metal plain parapet. has south door, available wheelchair access.


the vestry lies northeast alongside chancel. runs north aisle extends west end. again roof of metal.


the nave , chancel roofs pitched , tiled, latter traditional kent tiles.


tombs

a number of tombs in graveyard listed buildings in own right. boghurst tomb chest tomb of 1750 close south door. listing draws attention inscriptions, urn balusters , notes railed. moulding tomb chest tomb, time of 1789. lies east of church, adjacent old (not current) eastern boundary. inscriptions , urn balusters noted in official description. miller monument example of later (early 19 century) sarcophagus monument notable running dog frieze.


there group of 12 headstones listed single entry in official listing. 17th , 18th century, south of south aisle of church.

the main entrance church through west end door. base of tower has been refurbished cupboards made pews removed rear of church. right small door leading tower belfry. many of tombstones on floor translated there south aisle or north wall after 19th-century rebuilding. tower arch leading nave filled glazed oak screen inscribed names of war dead (world war 1 side, world war ii other) of parish.


the nave has been virtually obliterated successive building of arcades aisles. westernmost bay of south wall remains, heavily rebuilt in 15th century modern window. floor has been tiled , devoid of monuments. there no trace of rood loft henry larkin s of 1471 left goods pay maintenance. against tower wall dutch sanctus bell used hang (see bells, below). modern wc , kitchinette has been installed @ west end of nave.


the south aisle separated nave 3 bay arcade. arches plainly moulded resting upon octagonal piers. east window modern, in side wall restored in 15th century. small piscina in south wall gives evidence of site of lady chapel. floor has been raised , tiled little other trace remains. 1533 refers this: buried in our lady chaunsell in church of frennesbury. give said church cross stand uppon herse @ buryings , obetts, , @ other times uppon our lady aulter . @ west end of south aisle, adjacent south door 15th-century font. octagonal on stone column modern wooden cover. there notable wall monument of 1621 thomas buttler (see below) behind it.


the north aisle built in 1883. organ stood @ east end 1987 until ruined, see below.


the chancel approached through 10 feet (3.0 m) wide norman arch. squints on either side modern. chancel roof in part original (notably cross beams) of timberwork renewed. traces have been found of original windows in side walls surrounding frescos, blocked in when present perpendicular windows inserted. rose window in east wall reconstruction of original when wall rebuilt. below 3 norman windows many years had been covered reredos. when uncovered here surrounded medieval frescos, alas fading. in south wall there remains of priest s door , piscina.


the buttler memorial

there 2 panels, left hand 1 reads:



here doth thomas bvttler remaine
that sarved qveene elyzabethe raine
in ingland, france , spane
in irland, scotland best
and heare in grave, corps dooth reste:
a.d. 1621;

the right hand 1 records 2 wives, both of whom predeceased him:



dennis, wife of thomas bvttler,
was bvried, second day of janvary,
ano.dom. 1607
margaret, wife of thomas bvttler,
was bvred, third of febrvarye
ano.dom. 1617

frescos

the frescos uncovered in 1883 had practically disappeared 1990. remains of 1 have been preserved, others have been painted over. before frescos covered over, small copy of them made hangs on south wall of chancel.


the window in north wall has st. leonard in left jamb , st. edmund of pontigny in right. st edmund archbishop of canterbury 1234–40, known mural of him. there altars st. edmund in crypts of rochester , canterbury.


the window in south wall has on left capped , nimbed (haloed) female, otherwise unidentified, right unnimbed bishop. both faded @ time of discovery.


the east wall lights in part missing. of northern 1 half remains st. laurence in jamb. central light entirely missing , south two-fifths lost. left hand jamb has nimbed woman pink underdress , slate blue robe. hope supposes st. mary magdalene. right hand jamb has unnimbed pilgrim. hope believes figures date 1256 when bishop de st. laurence martin obtained grant of land frindsbury rochester priory , same year in st. william of perth canonised. right hand figure may therefore st. william, in case known mural of him.
