whitehaven has played host maritime festival, started in 1999 , held every 2 years, , annually, last being in 2013, attracting estimated 350,000 people small town.


attractions included tall ships, air displays include red arrows , various modern , old planes, street entertainment , firework displays. @ 2003, 2005 , 2007 festivals local sea cadets in evidence, conducting traditional evening colours ceremony each evening aboard 1 of visiting tall ships, , taking part in festival s official closing ceremony during late sunday afternoon each year.


the 2005 festival marked 60th anniversary of end of second world war in whitehaven had been designated cumbria s official commemoration celebration. 1,000 veterans , ex-service personnel took part in parade town s castle park harbour side, led members of 3 military bands. services held on harbour side , aircraft royal air force provided tribute display above harbour.


the maritime festivals founded gerard richardson mbe , organised whitehaven festival company, made of board of volunteers, organised 17 major events between 1999 , 2015. company closed in 2016. organised queen s visit whitehaven in june 2008, followed status quo gig in august of year. company staged 2 events in august 2009. first redesigned festival (known year whitehaven food festival, although did still feature tall ships) offered usual wide variety of attractions, both around southern half of harbour , @ st. nicholas church, on 8–9 august. second event, following week, here , gig (a music concert 1980s pop icons). june 2010 festival, similar in format 2009, music performances (status quo, n-dubz , katherine jenkins) moved harbour area.


the 2011 festival (featuring razorlight plus several 1980s acts including madness) continued successful culinary theme, return of jean-christophe novelli , other favourites. in 2012 date of festival changed first weekend in june, make part of queen s diamond jubilee celebration (with red, white , blue themed firework display).
