the mountain trogon may associate mixed species flocks. joins such flocks sporadically , in small numbers, active member of flock, moving in upper , middle levels of forest, when present.

the mountain trogon eats insects , small fruits, catches or plucks while on wing.

like trogons, mountain trogon cavity nester. both primary , secondary cavity nester, meaning both excavates own nest cavities, , uses cavities excavated species. when excavates own nest, uses beak gnaw hole in rotting wood, either in decaying stump or branch. cavity typically less 4 ft (1.2 m) off ground, high 12 ft (3.7 m). when uses cavity made species, typically uses made large woodpeckers. female lays 2 white eggs, both parents incubate, though female far longer stints male. eggs hatch after 19 days.

the mountain trogon has several vocalizations. if alarmed, gives sharp, low-pitched call variously transcribed cut or tuck . in flight, gives quick, low-pitched call transcribed cut-a-cut-cut . when perched, makes slow, repetitive cowh or tucka-tucka-tucka . young mountain trogons make quiet hissing calls when food begging, , when approached potential predators.
