bury

born in wigan, porter attended queen elizabeth s grammar school in blackburn, member of school s independent schools football association cup winning side in 2001. having featured in british universities team, porter had unsuccessful trials wigan athletic , blackpool before joining bury on trial. featured reserve team during 2002–03 season in 3–2 defeat walsall counterparts. scored bury s 2 goals in game, assisted on each occasion bury manager andy preece. following game, preece said chris still needs more aggression game , looks prospect . signed short-term contract club.


2002–03 season

porter made bench bury s third division 0–0 draw hartlepool united @ victoria park on 7 march 2003, unused substitute. made professional debut on 15 march when bury travelled macclesfield town. came on replace terry dunfield after 73 minutes of 0–0 draw. made second , final appearance of season on 3 may in bury s 3–0 home defeat wrexham, when replaced paul o shaughnessy after 69 minutes.


2003–04 season

during bury s 2003–04 pre-season campaign, porter scored third in 3–0 win on leigh rmi, before scoring hat-trick against young oldham athletic side stake claim starting position in bury s opening game of season. pre-season form paid dividends, earning starting berth alongside david nugent in season opening 4–2 defeat against swansea city on 9 august 2003. 1 week later, scored first professional goal in 3–2 home defeat scunthorpe united. porter, said didn t enjoy [his debut goal] as wanted because lost , withdrawn game after spraining ankle. made 2 goals in 2 games on 23 august side saw off kidderminster harriers 2–0, again failed complete full 90 minutes recurrence of ankle injury.


porter scored tenth , final goal of season on 8 may bury beat macclesfield 2–0 @ gigg lane. made 40 appearances in competitions on season.


2004–05 season

in newly renamed league two, porter scored first goal of season bury on 21 august 2004 in 1–1 draw chester city. received first red card of career on 28 september during football league trophy first round match stockport county. on yellow card, porter sent off in 90th minute of encounter, scores tied @ 1–1. bundled ball net using hand, , referee mark cowburn showed him straight red handball offence. bury lost game 3–1 after time, ending game 9 men on field. following suspension, returned score bench in 1–1 draw @ leyton orient on 9 october.


porter had been transfer target oldham athletic ahead of clash brentford on 15 march, oldham boss ronnie moore saying club had made reasonable offer . bury manager graham barrow said there no chance of him leaving , club stating oldham wanted take porter on loan view permanent deal in summer. loan move never materialised, porter matched last seasons tally final goal of season on 9 april when bury drew 2–2 kidderminster. scored ten goals in 36 appearances. contract expiring, porter offered new contract remain bury in summer of 2005.


oldham athletic

after rejecting new contract offer bury, porter joined league 1 side oldham athletic on 22 june 2005, signing two-year deal club. aim impress in pre-season, place in starting line-up when season starts , keep . said relishing challenge of playing @ higher level. porter s transfer fee subject tribunal, bury rejecting initial £25,000 offer oldham. bury asking £275,000, tribunal set transfer fee @ £50,000 front, bury receiving £25,000 after porter had made 15 appearances oldham, , further £25,000 after 30 games. tribunal added 15% sell-on clause future transfer fee.


2005–06 season

porter scored on league 1 debut on 6 august, heading in rob scott throw-in after 24 minutes side 2–0 win on yeovil town, despite carrying knee injury. scored first hat-trick of career when oldham drew 3–3 brentford @ griffin park on 19 november. trio of goals, headers, arrived within first 23 minutes of game, scoring 3 in 12 minutes.


an ankle injury left porter battling fitness in february, , knee injury left him able make sporadic appearances until end of season, requiring specialist treatment in close season. ended season having made 35 appearances in league , cups, scoring 9 goals.


2006–07 season

in 2006–07 season, porter opened scoring account brace during 2–0 win against nottingham forest on 12 september.


in march 2007, reported championship side stoke city interested in signing porter on loan view permanent £600,000 move in summer. oldham manager john sheridan expressed anger @ people unsettling our players when re trying push promotion . added porter had missed 5 or 6 chances d put away. s up. after missing 5 games knee damage, porter returned action in 1–0 win on promotion rivals yeovil on 31 march. scored 20th goal of season on 7 april in 1–1 home draw huddersfield. having turned down £650,000 bid championship side plymouth argyle porter during january transfer window, oldham managing director simon corney believed club faced battle retain porter s services in summer, said don t want stand in way of players can better @ bigger clubs , revealing there interest premiership club. scored 22nd , final goal of season goal against chesterfield on final day of season, securing play-off place side. porter described goal biggest goal of career — maybe not best important . played in both 2–1 play-off semi-final first leg defeat blackpool, , 3–1 second leg defeat.

porter signed mark mcghee s scottish premier league side motherwell on free transfer on 3 july 2007.


2007–08 season

porter made motherwell debut on 4 august 2007 when side earned 1–0 away win @ st mirren. first goal club arrived on 25 august winning goal in 2–1 win against gretna, match designated away game while gretna ground sharing fir park motherwell. scored 18 goals in 42 appearances.


2008–09 season

porter made european debut in uefa cup during 2008–09 season, replacing john sutton after 67 minutes of 1–0 defeat nancy @ stade marcel-picot on 18 september 2008. started in 2–0 home defeat french side in return leg on 2 october. between these games, porter received first red card since 2004 in 2–1 time defeat @ home hamilton academical on 24 september in league cup. scored first goal of season in motherwell s 3–2 win on falkirk on 5 october.

2009–10 season

porter s hip injury left him out of action 4 months. returned pre-season duty on 11 july 2009, scoring goal of game in friendly win against burton albion @ pirelli stadium. however, porter s hip problem ruled him out of final stages of 2008–09 season struck once again, player requiring operation again rule him out number of months. made return first-team action first time since march on 8 december, making substitute appearance in derby s 0–0 stalemate preston north end @ deepdale. scored first goal of season 4 days later on 26th birthday, coming off bench give side 1–0 win @ watford.


having featured substitute derby, porter began consistent run in team during march, making 5 consecutive starts, promised club s staff , fans after pre-season , injury-free season see best of me , can . ended season 24 games played , 4 goals scored.


2010–11 season

ahead of 2010–11 season, porter confident , fellow strikers @ derby made 1 of best strike forces in championship , , injuries hindered team s progress last season . missed portion of pre-season after requiring injection troublesome hip, returned 3–3 friendly draw bournemouth on 22 july. in second appearance of season, 1–0 league cup defeat crewe alexandra on 10 august, porter broke down hip injury, having replaced @ half-time. required further scans , specialist treatment overcome injury.


porter returned action first time in 3 months substitute in derby s 2–1 defeat burnley on 27 november. described time out of action worst time in football , not knowing cause of injury. selected start new year s day trip preston, scored 2 goals side 2–1 victory. contract expiring @ end of season, nigel clough challenged porter earn himself contract . on next month, porter regular feature in clough s starting line-up, manager believed porter working hard without reward . despite helping derby county reserve team league title, porter continued find himself in , out of first-team in latter stages of season. on 12 may, revealed porter released club , not offered new contract after deal expired. injury restricted him 50 appearances 25 starts, scoring 9 goals.


sheffield united

porter signed league 1 sheffield united on 15 july 2011, signing two-year contract.


2011–12 season

porter began 2011–12 pre-season goal in 1–1 friendly draw blackpool on 31 july. made full debut blades, starting against former club oldham athletic, in 2–0 away win on opening day of season. replaced daniel bogdanović after 78 minutes of play. porter scored first goal club against yeovil town on 27 august @ huish park goal of game.


after helping side play-offs, porter scored decisive goal send blades through 2012 football league 1 play-off final @ wembley stadium side beat stevenage 1–0 in semi-final second leg on 14 may, following 0–0 draw in first leg. sheffield united went on lose final huddersfield town on penalties, porter replacing richard cresswell in 85th minute of normal time. porter concluded season having made 44 appearances, scoring 8 goals.


2012–13 season

after lengthy period of negotiation, porter agreed new two-year deal sheffield united in july 2012. described first season club frustrating m hoping kick on year . however, first goal of new season didn t arrive until 3 november, scored winning goal in 2–1 fa cup win against bristol rovers.


porter suffered injury lay-off through of december 2012 , january 2013. meanwhile, sheffield united manager danny wilson declared there had been interest other clubs in porter.


shrewsbury town loan

after sitting in stands watching sheffield united defeat shrewsbury town 2–1 @ new meadow on 9 february 2013, porter sent out on loan shrewsbury in initial one-month loan deal on 13 february. porter hoped run of games , added ll goals . did scoring ten minutes debut during 2–0 win on tranmere rovers @ prenton park on 15 february, playing full 90 minutes. after 1 month shrewsbury , having made 5 appearances, porter returned sheffield.


return sheffield united

having been told blades manager danny wilson seize opportunity when selected in first-team, porter made immediate impact after being introduced half-time substitute dave kitson in first match club since return shrewsbury loan. scored equalising goal 20 minutes after arriving on pitch earn 1–1 draw walsall on 6 april 2013. following wilson s dismissal manager, caretaker manager chris morgan selected porter start first game in charge on 13 april. porter scored opening goal of game in 2–0 win on swindon town. goal represented personal milestone porter, being 100th career goal. ended season 4 goals united in 28 appearances.


2013–14 season , chesterfield loan

again out of favour @ sheffield united, porter signed on loan league 2 chesterfield on 4 october 2013 1 month. made debut on 5 october 81st-minute substitute, replacing gary mcsheffrey in 4–3 away defeat morecambe. made 3 league appearances , 1 football league trophy appearances before returning sheffield united.


on return sheffield, porter s former manager david weir had been replaced nigel clough, had played under @ derby county. clough willing allow porter chance fight place in first-team. made first start since chesterfield loan on 9 november 2013 in fa cup first round tie colchester united. scored late penalty kick hand blades 3–2 win. finished season 41 appearances sheffield united eleven goals scored.


2014–15 season

sheffield united had option automatically extend porter s contract further 12-months following expiry of original two-year deal. option not exercised after club decided offer porter alternate deal, while still keeping player on retained list . after delaying signing reduced-terms offer, porter signed new one-year deal on 10 june 2014.


the club planned let porter leave club on loan during january transfer window. revealed in january 2015 2 potential buyers had spoken porter availability on permanent transfer after being told surplus requirements @ bramall lane. after making 5 appearances in 2014–15 season, clough announced porter able leave club on free transfer.


colchester united

after having sheffield united contract terminated, on 22 january 2015, porter signed 18-month deal colchester united.


2014–15 season

porter made debut u s on 24 january, starting in 2–0 relegation battle victory on leyton orient, before being substituted macauley bonne in injury time. scored first goal club in second game, opening scoring against bradford city @ valley parade on 31 january in 1–1 draw. ended season 7 league goals in 21 appearances colchester.


2015–16 season

ahead of 2015–16 season, porter named club captain on 21 july 2015. after injury blighted start season, porter scored first goal of campaign on 21 november in 4–1 defeat millwall after coming on half-time substitute marvin sordell.


with club struggling in league one, on 19 february u s manager kevin keen decided hand club captaincy owen garvan foreseeable future , take little of responsibility off him [porter] . following day, porter scored first goal in on month opener against bury u s fell 5–2 defeat. made 35 appearances during season , scored 7 goals.

crewe alexandra

on 31 may 2017, porter signed two-year contract league 2 side crewe alexandra on free transfer after turning down new contract offer colchester. scored twice crewe on debut in 2-2 draw mansfield town on 5 august 2017.
