1941: First meeting between the Bronx Bombers and "Dem Bums" Dodgers–Yankees rivalry



the rivalry between yankees , brooklyn dodgers began when teams first met in 1941 world series. in game 4, yankees leading series 2 games one, dodgers led 1 going top of ninth inning and, 2 outs, barely missed getting third out , wound losing game. 2 outs, yankees tommy henrich swung , missed 2 strikes, reached on passed ball, dodger catcher mickey owen failed hold on pitch. henrich reached first base on play. owen recalled incident:



it great breaking curve should have had, guess ball hit side of glove. got away me, , time got hold of it, near corner of brooklyn dugout, couldn t have thrown out @ first.



joe dimaggio followed henrich s @ bat single before charlie keller hit double drive in both henrich , dimaggio , give yankees 5-4 lead. after bill dickey walked, , keller scored on joe gordon double make final score 7-4. next day, yankees clinched first series match-up between 2 teams in start of become long-lasting rivalry.
