eight pictish symbol stones have been found @ rhynie, including rhynie man , 6 foot tall boulder carved bearded man carrying axe, possibly representation of celtic god esus, discovered in 1978. rhynie man stands inside woodhill house (the headquarters of aberdeenshire council ) in aberdeen.


in 2011 archaeological excavations @ rhynie, near site of rhynie man , archaeologists aberdeen university , chester university uncovered substantial fortified settlement dating medieval period. among finds @ site fragments of late 5th or 6th century roman amphora must have been imported mediterranean region. significant known example of roman amphora eastern britain dating post-roman period, , indicates inhabitants of settlement must have been of high status. archaeologists working @ excavation have speculated settlement may have been royal site occupied pictish kings.
