through al davis, shell member of sid gillman coaching tree. coach of raiders (at time located in los angeles), shell compiled record of 54 wins, 38 losses, , named afc coach of year in 1990, when raiders won afc west division 12-4 record, , advanced afc championship game in playoffs, becoming first african-american coach lead team conference championship game. al davis, owner of raiders, fired shell after 9-7 season in 1994, move davis later called mistake .
after raiders
after leaving raiders, shell went on coaching positions kansas city chiefs , atlanta falcons, before serving senior vice president nfl, in charge of football operations.
2006 return raiders
shell officially re-hired raiders head coach on february 11, 2006. after leading team worst record (2 wins, 14 losses) since 1963, shell fired second time head coach of raiders on january 4, 2007. although raiders defense 1 of best in league, anemic offense, along season long feud wide receiver jerry porter led team s downfall.
