because citrus taxonomy still understudied, there many systems of classification contradict each other. there 2 main complete systems, of tanaka , of swingle; however, many citrus types identified , named individual taxonomists.


the basis of tanaka system provide separate species name each cultivar, regardless of whether pure or hybrid of 2 or more species or varieties. tanaka therefore considered have been taxonomic splitter .


the swingle system works differently, in first divides genus citrus species, secondly divides further varieties, , lastly divides again cultivars or hybrids. swingle system followed today modification; however, there still huge differences in nomenclature between countries , individual scientists.
