a tropical wave moved off coast of africa between august 15 , august 16. wave moved westward @ 15 20 mph (24 32 km/h), , developed atmospheric convection along wave axis. organized, developing low-level circulation, , formed tropical depression on august 20 while located 775 miles (1,250 km) east of barbados. reconnaissance aircraft flight system on august 21 confirmed existence of depression, reported winds of 23 mph (37 km/h) pressure of 1,012 mbar. depression strengthened , organized, , after turning west-northwest, intensified tropical storm emmy on august 22 while located 370 miles (600 km) east-northeast of guadeloupe. tropical wave emmy developed continued westward through caribbean sea , developed tropical storm joanna in eastern pacific ocean.


tropical storm emmy turned more northwest, , passed 135 miles (220 km) northeast of barbuda on august 23. rapid development of unseasonable frontal low pressure system northeast of storm turned emmy sharply east-northeastward on august 25. eastward movement @ such low latitude time of year unprecedented. storm steadily intensified , emmy attained hurricane status later on 25th while located 270 miles (430 km) north of barbuda. after moving eastward 24 hours, westerlies retreated northward, , emmy turned gradually northwest.


a strong ridge on north atlantic ocean turned emmy sharply eastward on august 29. hurricane continued strengthen, , emmy attained peak intensity of 105 mph (170 km/h) shortly after turning east while located 500 miles (800 km) northeast of bermuda. hurricane maintained peak intensity 42 hours while moving eastward @ 17 mph (27 km/h), , weakened after peaking in strength. on september 1, emmy turned east-southeast, , day later turned northeast forward motion decreased. emmy passed through azores on september 3, , following day became extratropical north of islands. extratropical remnant persisted 6 hours before being absorbed approaching hurricane frances.
