kim started san diego asian film festival (sdaff) in 2000, inspired conversation had overheard while speaking @ local technology company. first sdaff held in august 2000 on campus of university of california, san diego 5 features, multiple shorts, , guest appearances margaret cho , tamlyn tomita.
i speaking @ tech company here, , overheard bunch of caucasians talking favorite asian movies, how d together, eat dim sum , talk on films. @ same time, head of asian-american journalists association local chapter, , thinking how engage larger audience our issues. [...] well, m not film connoisseur, knew festival create community need, give asians here way address issues , reach others.
in 2002, organization running sdaff applied nonprofit status san diego asian film foundation. after scope of san diego asian film foundation grew beyond film, nonprofit rebranded pacific arts movement (pac-arts) in 2012. kim served executive director san diego asian film foundation , pac-arts until retired nonprofit in april 2016.
