early history of frindsbury
the romans built stone bridge across medway , laid road on causeway across marshy ground below frindsbury. evidence of causewayed road along bank towards frindsbury peninsula leading villa found in 1819. present road , field pattern suggest there substantial roman agricultural settlement centred near frindsbury.
bishop eardulf of rochester obtained freandisberi , wicham in 747. either in confirmation or in addition offa, king of mercia, , sigered, joint king of kent, granted 20 sulungs of land @ aeslingham in freodesbrei bishop in 764. in 778, king egbert gave more land bishop. in 840, 994, , 998 ad strood pillaged danes. area wrested church , came under control of harold godwinson. after harold s defeat @ battle of hastings, william conqueror gave lands odo, bishop of bayeux, earl of kent, , william s half brother. archbishop lanfranc recovered them again @ trial of penenden heath (c. 1072) , restored them bishop gundulf of rochester. gundulf responsible commencing rebuilding of rochester cathedral , establishing benedictine priory of st andrew based upon it. gave land @ frindsbury new priory though insisting paid sum him or successors on st andrews day.
the medieval church
whether there saxon church @ frindsbury not known certain, wade regards highly probable . original norman church rebuilt in stone around 1075 paulinus, sacrist of rochester gave books , vestments it. domesday book records presence of church in 1086, no further details of it. domesday record bishop entitled 10 shillings (50p) manor of frindsbury. church rebuilt in 1127. term rebuilding may refer large repair rather complete reconstruction.
a small wooden church erected @ strood in 1122 chapel of ease parish church. became st nicholas , parish church of strood in 1193 , situated watling street left firm ground run on marshes medway bridge.
bishop gilbert de glanvill claimed frinsdsbury monks belonging maintenance of table in 1185. according hasted bishop succeeded in obtaining church, manor remained in possession of monks until dissolution of monasteries under henry viii in 1523. barnard records in 1256, church of frindsbury (and income) returned bishop.
there chapel dedicated st peter (1142) within manor of islingham. services held 1330 1542 when discontinued. building became oast house.
in 1279 , again in 1293, 1314 , 1357 bishop of rochester claimed liberties in lands of priory of frindsbury lands belonging church. there more building in 14th century , around 1407.
modern
during english reformation, decorations removed or painted over. wall paintings of st lawrence, st edmund of canterbury, , st william of perth discovered in 1883. church extensively restored in 1884, large donation mrs murray, wife rev. george edward murray, son of former bishop of rochester.
upnor (st philip , st james) became independent parish in 1884, reabsorbed in 1955.
