sergeant grant f. timmerman

for service set forth in following citation:
for conspicuous gallantry , intrepidity @ risk of life above , beyond call of duty tank commander serving second battalion, sixth marines, second marine division, during action against enemy japanese forces on saipan, marianas islands, on 8 july 1944. advancing tank few yards ahead of infantry in support of vigorous attack on hostile positions, sergeant timmerman maintained steady fire antiaircraft sky mount machine gun until progress impeded series of enemy trenches , pillboxes. observing target of opportunity, ordered tank stopped and, mindful of danger muzzle blast prepared open fire 75-mm., fearlessly stood in exposed turret , ordered infantry hit deck. quick act grenade, hurled japanese, drop open turret hatch, sergeant timmerman unhesitatingly blocked opening body, holding grenade against chest , taking brunt of explosion. exceptional valor , loyalty in saving men @ cost of own life reflect highest credit upon sergeant timmerman , united states naval service. gallantly gave live in service of country.
