ancient china

the area of present-day shifang formed part of western qiang (西羌, xīqiāng), 1 of regions appear in ancient chinese records birthplace of famed usurper yu great. local tourism board has pressed claim born in shifang, similar claims made beichuan, wenchuan, , dujiangyan in sichuan, many other places in other parts of china.


imperial china

following conquest of shu qin, qin administrator li bing lived in shifang during work on dujiangyan irrigation system. historians make him native of area. following collapse of qin, tiny kingdom of zhifang formed in present-day shifang in 201 bc. area reconquered martial emperor of han in 111 bc , formed part of kingdom of shu during china s 3 kingdoms period. under northern zhou, merged luo county (t 雒縣, s 雒县, luòxiàn) sometime between 566 , 576. reëstablished tang in 619. chan (chinese zen) buddhist patriarch mazu daoyi born in shifang s town of mazu in 709. formed part of former shu between 912 , 919.


in late imperial times, shifang county organized part of prefecture of chengdu. following columbian exchange, it—along rest of plain around chengdu—became center of china s tobacco cultivation. in 19th century, shifang county reckoned have third-best quality of tobacco, after nearby pi , jintang counties.


modern china

the people s republic of china made county-level city in 1995, placing under administration of deyang.


shifang 1 of severely hit cities in 2008 sichuan earthquake, death toll of 5924. many of killed children, 13 school buildings totally collapsing in hongbai, yinghua, luoshui, jiandi, bajiao, , other towns , dozens of other schools partially collapsing throughout county. altogether, 12 teachers , 550 students killed.
