in regions, red-headed trogon sedentary although researchers have observed altitudinal movements in southern laos, in sangthong district, northern laos.


habits

red-headed trogons can found perched on shaded branch waiting prey, alone or in pairs. flight between trees sluggish , low, few meters above ground.


red-headed trogons active in hours of morning , @ night, when fly on edges of forest clearings in pursuit of flying moths.


in central south thailand, share habitat orange-breasted trogon (harpactes oreskios). 2 species follow flocks of foraging birds taking advantage of insects flush out.


calls

the male’s call resembles of eurasian golden oriole (oriolus oriolus): sequence of 5 six, well-spaced mellow “tyaup” notes, repeated every minute. male calls extended “pluu-du” note marked significant terminal drop in pitch. call repeated every 3–6 seconds. alarm signal, red-headed trogon emits chattering croak.


feeding

red-headed trogons feed on insects , larvae found in foliage, on tree branches or in mid air. eat leaves , fruits. food items include green orthopterans, stick-insects, cicadas, millipedes, flies, beetles, centipedes, woodlice , moths.
