the english grounds of wörlitz 1 of first , largest english parks in germany. created in late 18th century under regency of duke leopold iii of anhalt-dessau (1740–1817), after returning grand tour italy, netherlands, england, france , switzerland had taken architect friend friedrich wilhelm von erdmannsdorff. unlike formal baroque gardens, celebrated naturalistic manner of english landscape garden, , symbolised promised freedom of enlightenment era.

the important architect of style in germany undoubtedly karl friedrich schinkel. schinkel s style, in productive period, defined appeal greek rather imperial roman architecture, avoiding style linked recent french occupiers. famous buildings found in , around berlin. these include neue wache (1816–1818), schauspielhaus (1819–1821) @ gendarmenmarkt, replaced earlier theater destroyed fire in 1817, , altes museum (old museum, see photo) on museum island (1823–1830).
