finland

the finnish police agency investigating case national bureau of investigation (nbi), , case heard @ helsinki district court. 2 employees of patria have been arrested questioning, of 1 has been officially imprisoned helsinki district court , 1 has been released. ceo, jorma wiitakorpi, still considered suspect, charged bribery , industrial espionage, although patria s own investigations found no evidence. furthermore, helsinki district court imprisoned austrian , slovenian businessman in absentia, , hearings prepared in co-operation austrian , slovenian officials. however, appeals court returned verdict of innocence, , prosecutor decided not appeal supreme court, citing lack of evidence.


the finnish nbi criticized actions of slovenian counterparts. according nbi, slovenian police has not provided information requested investigation. on other hand, when nbi sent classified list of individuals slovenian police should interview, no interviews arranged, secret list leaked public. according officer in charge of investigation, despite slovenian police being able , willing co-operate, difficulties in co-operation between officials hindering investigation.


two patria executives found guilty of bribing croatian officials between 2005 , 2008 kanta-häme district court. executives given conditional sentences , company fined 300,000 euros. however, case appealed , appeals court due process in 2015.

the austrian police suspected money laundering , other offenses, when wolf’s bank warned them suspicious transactions , blocked account. austrian interpol notified slovenian police slovenian police ignored notification. replied after more year, when news published in slovenian daily dnevnik.


slovenia

the slovenian police investigation has been practically stalled, according mot. slovenian police rejected accusations of having leaked secret list. started internal investigation of why interpol notification has not been answered to.

while antagonists in ongoing patria scandal wage media war on whether janša’s sds bribe-taker or victim of conspiracy, cables make us’ understanding of matter quite clear. may 2007 cable has ambassador robertson quoting “clandestine source” “pm janez janša’s sds received more eur 2.8m ‘under table’ patria.” cable on meeting janša reports politician’s “ignorance” details of apcs tender “was bit disingenuous, since know slovenia’s former defence minister follows these issues”. views of ambassador, adds in same cable “the entire patria deal has smelled fishy get-go”, explained away sds.




slovenian prosecutors filed charges corruption against janez janša on aug 6, 2010, though janša affirmed did not receive notification. janša denied having requested or received rewards or payments related patria deal in statement on aug 27, 2010.


bribery trial in slovenia (2011)

in september 2011 bribery trial has begun in ljubljana court following criminal investigations , indictments bribery or complicity in bribery connected 2006 purchase of 135 patria apc. 5 defendants in trial are: jože zagožen, tone krkovič, janez janša, walter wolf, ivan Črnkovič.


on june 5, 2013 liubljana district court sentenced former prime minister janez janša 2 years of prison receiving bribes patria oy. co-defendants, brigadier tone krkovič , ivan Črnkovič, sentenced 1 year , 10 months in prison.
