central link s northern terminus university of washington station, located near husky stadium , campus of university of washington in northeastern seattle. line heads south in university link tunnel, crossing under montlake cut of lake washington ship canal , state route 520 before taking turn southwest. tunnel climbs capitol hill , passes under interlaken park , volunteer park before turning due south enter capitol hill station on east side of broadway. tunnel makes gradual turn west, dipping far south east union street, , crosses under interstate 5 @ pine street. merges downtown seattle transit tunnel within pine street stub tunnel, joining buses convention place station.


the downtown transit tunnel, shared between light rail trains , buses, travels west under pine street through westlake station, , south on 3rd avenue through university street , pioneer square stations in downtown seattle. terminates @ international district/chinatown station, adjacent king street station (served amtrak , sounder commuter rail), buses continuing onto sodo busway , other streets. central link parallels busway through stadium , sodo stations, traveling through several gated crossings. sodo station, track ascends elevated guideway traveling east along south forest street, passing line s railyard , maintenance facility. elevated trackway passes on airport way , comes rest on embankment under interstate 5, entering beacon hill tunnel.


the beacon hill tunnel travels approximately 1 mile (two kilometres) under beacon hill, serving station @ beacon avenue south. trains exit tunnel on east side of hill, turning southeast , approaching elevated mount baker station @ intersection of rainier avenue south , martin luther king jr. way south. light rail trains descend mount baker station onto median of martin luther king jr. way south, running at-grade signal priority. central link passes through rainier valley , serves 3 at-grade stations, columbia city, othello, , rainier beach, before leaving seattle.


the line enters tukwila , crosses west on interstate 5 , mainline railroad @ boeing access road, near boeing field, before making southward turn on east marginal way south. central link continues south on duwamish river, traveling non-stop through tukwila on 4.7-mile (7.6 km) elevated guideway. guideway runs along west sides of state route 599 , interstate 5 towards southcenter mall, turns west along state route 518. line passes through tukwila international boulevard station, home 600-stall park , ride facility, , turns south median of airport expressway towards seatac. light rail trains continue along east side of seattle–tacoma international airport, stopping @ seatac/airport station near airport s terminals, before reaching angle lake station, terminates.


central link, while officially light rail line, has been described light metro hybrid transit experts due grade separated sections , use of larger trainsets typical american light rail systems. out of line s 20.35-mile (32.75 km) length, 6.4 miles (10.3 km) at-grade, including grade separated segments along freeways.
