the architectural highlight of town grade listed gothic style high anglican st augustine s church, designed 19th century architect george frederick bodley between 1871 , 1874 , acknowledged finest work. 1 of 6 grade listed buildings in city of salford. church became known miners cathedral because of lofty appearance , because many local men colliers. churchyard contains memorial 178 men , boys died in disaster @ clifton hall colliery on 18 june 1885. 64 victims buried @ st augustine s. in may 2006, church became focal point of campaign english heritage save 19 places of worship in greater manchester falling dilapidation.


the royal manchester children s hospital built in 1873 closed in 2009 , functions moved site alongside manchester royal infirmary, in manchester.
