History Single steel drilling caisson

wells drilled ssdc in beaufort sea.

after first 2 seasons, found out constructing flat underwater gravel berm @ every drilling location time-consuming. in august 1986, before being deployed in american part of beaufort sea, ssdc mated submersible barge named mat built hitachi zosen. removed need prepare seafloor drilling operations , made unit capable of operating year-round in water depths between 7 , 24 metres (23 , 79 ft) , in wide variety of soil conditions. upon deployment, high density polyurethane foam injected beneath artificial steel berm ensure contact seafloor. ssdc , mat have not been separated since.

in september 1986, ssdc deployed @ phoenix site in harrison bay, alaska. water depth 17.5 metres (57 ft) , top of mat 4 metres (13 ft) below surface. drilling of tenneco oil exploration company began on 23 september , ended on 19 december 1986. in following year, rig moved aurora site, drilled tenneco in 21 metres (69 ft) of water between 2 november 1987 , 30 august 1988. afterwards, ssdc towed canadian waters , stored in sheltered waters of thetis bay near herschel island 2 winters.

in 1990, ssdc returned alaska , began drilling arco alaska @ fireweed site in 15 metres (50 ft) of water on 19 october 1990. finished on 25 december 1990 , on 11 january 1991 second arco alaska spud @ cabot site in 17 metres (55 ft) of water. after completed on 26 february 1992, ssdc placed in long-term storage ( cold stacked ) @ port clarence, alaska, not trapped in beaufort sea ice if work found elsewhere. cabot last 1 drilled ssdc under canadian ownership. in 1997, amoco sold canmar s former fleet of drilling units , offshore icebreakers norway-based seatankers ltd. drilling unit re-registered marshall islands , name shortened sdc. submersible barge mat renamed sdc ii.

ten years later, sdc recommissioned drill exploratory encana oil & gas @ mccovey prospect off alaska. after month , half of preparations, rig towed beaufort sea in july 2002 2 icebreakers, arctic kalvik , kigoria, completed 600-nautical-mile (1,100 km; 690 mi) tow port clarence in 12 days. preparations winter stopped on 15 august 2 months avoid disturbing bowhead whaling season. drilling of well, located in 11 metres (35 ft) of water, began on 6 december 2002 , completed on 27 january 2003. no immediate drilling work available sdc, rig towed thetis bay had been stored 2 winters. in 2003, ownership of drilling unit passed liberian-registered company, sdc drilling inc, , both sdc , sdc ii reflagged liberia.

few years later, devon canada chose sdc on artificial islands drill first wildcat in canadian beaufort sea in 17 years. however, last remaining vessels of original beaufort sea offshore fleet had been sold overseas few years earlier, , company had charter russian icebreaker vladimir ignatyuk (the former arctic kalvik) way murmansk complete one-day tow thetis bay anchorage paktoa c-60 site. initially, plan drill 1 in during winter of 2005–2006 and, depending on results, continue 3 more wells during next 3 winters. however, despite encouraging results, drilled between 5 december 2005 , 19 march 2006 in 13 metres (43 ft) of water did not strike multi-trillion-cubic-foot gas reservoir devon looking for, , subsequent wells cancelled. sdc towed anchorage @ thetis bay.

since 2006, sdc has been cold stacked off herschel island, canada. of 2017, mothballed rig last remaining drilling unit built oil exploration in beaufort sea in 1980s. 2 other bottom-founded units, glomar beaufort 1 , molikpaq, have been converted production platforms in sakhalin, russia, , floating conical drilling unit kulluk scrapped after drifting aground off sitkalidak island in gulf of alaska in 2012.
