on august 20, low pressure area producing unsettled weather in western caribbean sea, , centered 400 mi (644 km) west-northwest of maracaibo, venezuela, determined have become tropical depression. however, prior scientific reanalysis in april 2012 based upon 1975 report, not believed have done until 2 days later. moving west-northwest, depression strengthened tropical storm on august 21, , turned northwestward while strengthening steadily. after brushing cape san antonio @ western tip of cuba on august 22, cyclone veered west-northwest. on august 23, storm became hurricane on southern gulf of mexico. later day, cyclone continued intensify , began curving northwestward. august 24, winds of 100 mph (160 km/h), turned north. on august 25, cyclone peaked modern-day 115 mph (185 km/h) category 3, based on pressure–wind relationship. in afternoon, struck west of houma, louisiana, @ intensity. less 24 hours later, storm rapidly weakened moderate tropical storm , curved west-northwestward, weakening tropical depression on august 27 , dissipating on texas.


no known effects reported caribbean due cyclone. on morning of august 24, united states weather bureau in washington, d.c., advised storm make landfall between galveston, texas, , burrwood, louisiana. late day, hurricane warnings issued morgan city, louisiana, mobile, alabama. although small in size @ landfall, storm caused storm surge of 15 feet (4.6 m) south of houma , hurricane-force winds in small area near center. lowest recorded pressure 959 mb (28.32 inhg) @ houma, though taken inland , not believed have been in exact center, recent estimates place central pressure lower @ 955 mb (28.20 inhg). along gulf coast of united states, storm caused $6 million (1926 usd) in damage crops , buildings, substantial damage vegetation. in all, 25 deaths reported, although extensive ship reports , timely warnings mail, telephone, radio, , telegraph reduced number of casualties.
