originally chartered governor benning wentworth in 1752, called burnet after william burnet, former governor of province of massachusetts bay. in 1754, however, french , indian war broke out, , no settlements made under charter. wentworth regranted township on 19 september 1766, naming after sir jacob acworth, former surveyor of royal navy. town first permanently settled in 1768 several families londonderry.


acworth incorporated in 1772 governor john wentworth, war again slowed development. close of revolution, however, acworth grew quickly. 1859, had 1,251 inhabitants, of whom occupied in agriculture. cold river provided water power industry, including 5 sawmills, gristmill, woolen factory, bobbin factory , peg factory. there boot , shoe manufacturer. acworth source museum-quality crystals such beryl. town of acworth, georgia named town, because hometown of railroad engineer there.
