original broadway production

company opened in boston in out-of-town tryouts, receiving mixed reviews, boston evening globe brilliant , variety songs part undistinguished , stands s ladies matinees, homos , misogynists.


the musical opened on broadway on april 26, 1970, @ alvin theatre, ran 705 performances after 7 previews. directed hal prince, opening cast included dean jones (who had replaced anthony perkins in rehearsal period when perkins departed direct play), donna mckechnie, susan browning, george coe, pamela myers, barbara barrie, charles kimbrough, merle louise, beth howland, , elaine stritch. musical staging michael bennett, assisted bob avian. set design boris aronson consisted of 2 working elevators , various vertical platforms emphasized musical’s theme of isolation.


shortly after opening night, jones withdrew show, reportedly due illness, due belief show nihilistic, spurred on ongoing divorce proceedings. replaced understudy larry kert, had created role of tony in west side story. kert earned rave reviews performance when critics invited return. in unusual move, tony awards committee deemed kert eligible nomination, honor reserved actor originates role.


original cast album: company

the making of original cast recording captured award-winning documentary filmmaker d. a. pennebaker shortly after show opened on broadway pilot tv series highlighting different ways cast-album recording session conducted. however, week after original screening, original producers proposed series hired go out hollywood , head production @ mgm. nobody left in new york spearhead project, series scrapped. lone pilot film remains of idea never brought fruition.


the 1970 film original cast album: company filled behind scenes footage of 14-hour recording process @ columbia records big church recording studio @ east 30th street , third avenue on first sunday in may, complete of musical direction , insight of sondheim himself. several of show s numbers captured in film—including hundred people , getting married today , , being alive —all recorded live orchestra, done in multiple takes on course of several hours.


eventually ladies lunch remained recorded. past midnight, , stritch, sondheim, , orchestra suffering effects of day s marathon recording session. stritch struggled repeatedly record satisfactory version of song, going far drop key few takes. voice continued degrade , energy continued ebb away. struggled, conflict seen between stritch, producer thomas z. shepard, , sondheim.


before dawn, agreed stop. recorded 1 last take of orchestra , agreed have stritch come in week , record vocal on recorded orchestra track. finale of film features revitalized stritch, in full hair , makeup in preparation wednesday matinee performance of show, performing ladies lunch in 1 take.


first national tour

the first national tour opened on may 20, 1971, @ ahmanson theatre in los angeles, california, george chakiris bobby, , closed on may 20, 1972, @ national theatre in washington, d.c..


original london production

the first west end production opened on january 18, 1972, @ majesty s theatre, ran 344 performances. original cast included larry kert, elaine stritch, joy franz, , donna mckechnie; dilys watling , julia mckenzie replacements later in run.


original australian production

the sydney theatre company presented first australian production @ sydney opera house s drama theatre in january , february 1986. directed richard wherrett, featured john o may bobby other cast members including simon burke, terence donovan, barry quin , geraldine turner.


1995 broadway revival

after 43 previews, 1995 roundabout theatre revival, directed scott ellis , choreographed rob marshall, opened on october 5, 1995, @ criterion center stage right, ran 60 performances. cast included boyd gaines, kate burton, robert westenberg, diana canova, debra monk, lachanze, charlotte d amboise, jane krakowski, danny burstein , veanne cox.


1995 london revival

the 1995 london revival directed sam mendes @ donmar warehouse. previews began on december 1, opening on december 13 , closing on march 2, 1996. production transferred albery theatre, previews starting on march 7, opening on march 13 , closing on june 29. cast included adrian lester first black actor play bobby in major production of show. videotaped recording of donmar warehouse production broadcast bbc 2 on march 1, 1997. on sunday, november 7, 2010, one-off concert of company starring of 1995 london revival cast, including adrian lester bobby, held @ queen s theatre on shaftesbury avenue, commemorate 80th birthday of composer, stephen sondheim.


kennedy center production

a kennedy center (washington, dc) production, presented part of summer-long presentation of sondheim musicals, opened on may 17, 2002, 17-performance run. directed sean mathias, cast included john barrowman robert, emily skinner, alice ripley, , lynn redgrave. production utilized script of original 1970 production, rather 1995 revival script, , set show in 1970s, shown wardrobe of cast members.


2006 broadway revival

a new revival had try-outs @ cincinnati playhouse in park, robert s. marx theatre in march through april 2006. production, directed , choreographed john doyle, opened broadway on november 29, 2006, @ ethel barrymore theatre cast included raúl esparza, first latino actor play bobby in major production of show, alongside barbara walsh joanne. in doyle s 2005 broadway production of sweeney todd, demon barber of fleet street, actors provided orchestral accompaniment. example, in closing number, being alive, raul esparza, bobby, accompanies himself on piano; angel desai, marta, plays saxophone , violin, singing solo on hundred people ; entire company sings , plays accompaniment during second-act opener. production won tony award best revival of musical. musical closed on july 1, 2007, after 34 previews , 246 performances. taped , broadcast on great performances program of pbs in 2007. video released on dvd in 2008.


2007 australian production

kookaburra musical theatre mounted production directed gale edwards in sydney in june 2007, starring david campbell bobby, cast including simon burke, anne looby, james millar, pippa grandison, katrina retallick, tamsin carroll , christie whelan. show well-received, , sondheim travelled australia first time in thirty years attend opening night. however, production caused major controversy when whelan out sick 1 performance , (with no understudy) kookaburra chief executive peter cousens insisted show performed anyway, without character of april. involved cutting several numbers , scenes no explanation, , night s performance ended twenty minutes early. following complaints audience, there considerable negative press attention decision, , sondheim threatened revoke production rights show.


2011 new york philharmonic concert

in april 2011, lonny price directed staged concert production, neil patrick harris robert, stephen colbert harry, craig bierko peter, jon cryer david, katie finneran amy, christina hendricks april, aaron lazar paul, jill paice susan, martha plimpton sarah, anika noni rose marta, jennifer laura thompson jenny, jim walton larry, chryssie whitehead kathy, , patti lupone joanne. paul gemignani conducted 35-piece orchestra, uses similar orchestrations first broadway production. concert follows long tradition of stephen sondheim concert productions @ new york philharmonic, including sweeney todd , passion. filmed presentation of concert debuted in select movie theatres on june 15, 2011. dvd version released on november 13, 2012. cast of production gathered again live performance @ 2011 tony awards, hosted harris, on june 12, 2011.


2018 london revival

on 24 november 2016, announced revival part of elliott & harper productions debut season, production company formed director marianne elliott , producer chris harper begins in autumn 2018 @ unannounced west end theatre.

in september 2017 announced production staged @ gielgud theatre september 2018 , star patti lupone joanne.

a 1997 repertory philippines production starred victor laurel bobby.
a brazilian production opened on february 8, 2001, @ teatro villa-lobos in rio de janeiro, closed april 22, opened april 27 @ teatro alfa in são paulo, returned teatro villa-lobos in rio.
a 2010 production opened in norway @ national venue of norway(den nationale scene) in bergen. cast included jon bleiklie devik, karoline krüger/ragnhild gudbrandsen, wenche kvamme, monica hjelle, among others.
a 2011 israeli production opened on may 28, 2011, @ beersheba theatre.
