red-naped trogons inactive outside of regular feeding patterns. because of this, birdwatchers , biologists have noted “apart general beauty, notorious lack of other engaging qualities”. lack of activity has been considered defence against predation. other trogonidae species, red-naped trogons have been reported shift along branches keep dull coloured backs turned towards observers, while heads, can rotate @ 180 degrees owls, turned keep watch on potential predators. preyed upon hawks , predatory mammals.

the red-naped trogon territorial , monogamous species. males repel other members of same species, , other nesting species, around nesting sites ensure safety of nest. males attract females singing. flocks of 3-12 individuals have been observed prior to, , during breeding season, calling , chasing each other, however, function of these flocks unknown.
little known nesting habits of red-naped trogon, assumed cavity nesters. recorded account of red-naped trogon nest of brood found in july 1976 in peninsular malaysia. nest dug in cavity of rotten stump few meters off ground. produce clutch size of between 1 , 3 eggs. incubation period lasts between 16–19 days. upon hatching, chicks altricial, blind , naked, however, acquire feathers rapidly. nesting period takes between 16–23 days fledge.
