designed modernist architect craig ellwood, hillside campus broke ground in november 1974. bridge building spanned arroyo , roadway on 175 acres (71 ha) in hills above pasadena. opening in 1976, building later expanded south wing, designed former ellwood associate james tyler, , constructed between 1989-91. hillside campus houses classrooms , studio space, multiple computer labs, james lemont fogg memorial library, model shop traditional tools rapid prototyping technologies (multi-axis cnc, laser-cutting, , multiple types of 3d printing), painting facilities, color, material, , trends exploration lab (cmtel), (auto) interior simulation lab, sinclaire pavilion, photo , film stages printing , editing facilities, , both curated student gallery , external exhibit gallery, both open public. hillside campus has been designated historic monument city of pasadena.


south campus

the south campus opened in 2004 in former aircraft-testing facility built during world war ii. renovated santa monica-based firm daly genik, houses graduate art , media design practices programs , studios, exhibition space both of programs, print shop, letterpress studio, , public programs such artcenter @ night, artcenter kids, design-based learning lab. there 16,000-square-foot (1,500 m) exhibition space known wind tunnel, home of media design practices program. wind tunnel has hosted events including biannual artcenter design conference, 2006 s radical craft , 2008 s serious play ; annual summit on sustainable mobility; large exhibitions such supersonic: 1 wind tunnel, 8 schools, 120 artists , gardenlab , , open house: architecture , technology intelligent living (with vitra design museum); , various community meetings , events.


in 2012, artcenter announced expansion of south campus acquisition of former u.s. postal service property adjacent existing campus, made entirely possible through college s philanthropic efforts. @ time, college appointed michael maltzan architecture partner in planning academic spaces , expansion of educational resources. agreement still intact, actual renovation of former usps building completed darin johnstone architecture in 2014. in 2014, artcenter announced acquisition of office building @ gateway pasadena , future plans new student housing, of elevate south campus satellite location equal programs , activities found @ hillside campus.
